Most owners know something's off. They're usually looking at the wrong part of it. The WhatsApp chaos is really a week that only exists in one person's head. The website that isn't working is really a message trying to talk to four audiences at once.
So we don't decide the answer before we understand the problem. Sometimes it's an app. Sometimes it's a name, a clearer message, or a proposal that finally says what you mean. Whatever it is, you'll be able to see it, use it and argue with it. You won't get a forty-page report and a handshake.
You know your business. I bring distance, a different way of seeing, and the patience to stay with it until something clicks.
I've run my own business since 2006, so I know where the time goes. I'm a painter and designer by training, not an engineer. AI lets me build fast, so more of our time goes on the thinking. The tool doesn't matter. The judgement does.
It starts with looking
I don't turn up with a diagnosis. I ask questions until the real thing surfaces — not the presenting problem, but what's underneath it. That's where the work actually starts.
We make it visible
Prototypes, maps, proposals written in your words. Things we can both point at. When everyone can see the same picture, decisions stop being arguments.
We build until it's right
Apps, brands, systems — made with you as we go. I know when something is working the same way I know when a painting is done. Not by the clock. By how it feels when you use it.

The first client asked for help with his rota. A few months later he asked me to help launch a completely different business. That second call says more about how we worked together than anything I could write here.

What we saw
The problem wasn't WhatsApp. It was that the whole week lived in the owner's head, and every Sunday night he rebuilt it by hand for sixteen people.
What we made
A scheduling app, designed around how the team already worked: a rota, a phone view for every person on site, holiday and sick tracking, materials and costs, an equipment log and a monthly export to Xero.
What changed
Everyone has their day on their phone. Holidays add up by themselves. Each month's work exports straight to Xero, ready to invoice.

What we saw
A good carpenter who had never gone digital. Paperwork lived in the van and his head. From April 2027, Making Tax Digital means sole traders earning over £30,000 have to keep digital records and report to HMRC every quarter.
What we made
An app on his phone, built from the gardening firm's core and set up around his week: quotes, jobs, materials, mileage, and invoices that take CIS off the labour automatically. Every quarter it lays out the figures ready to upload to HMRC-recognised software.
Why it matters
He doesn't have to learn bookkeeping. The records keep themselves as he works. And it proves the core travels: from a sixteen-person team to one person and a van.

A garden design start-up

What we saw
A strong idea being pulled in several directions: a mission, a price point, a design system and four quite different audiences, all competing for the first sentence.
What we made
A naming audit that led to a new name. An interactive strategy explorer that sets out who they're talking to and what each audience needs to hear first. A logo review, the full proposal, and the scope for the website and the customer journey behind it.
Why it matters
The founders can now make decisions against one clear picture, instead of re-arguing the message every time someone new joins the conversation.

What we saw
Communication friction spread thin across branches and across buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants — easy to feel, hard to see all at once.
What we made
A private, interactive tool designed to go out ahead of a first conversation: sliders across five real touchpoints, nothing stored or tracked, so a director could show where things ran themselves and where they didn't — before we ever spoke.
Why it matters
This is how I'd rather open a real relationship: with structure, not a generic discovery call. Included here as a sample of the approach.

What we saw
West Dean's own 2026–2031 strategy commits to using AI in learning and teaching. The commitment was stated; how to do it, and who leads it, wasn't settled.
What we made
A positioning paper written in my own time, grounded in sector data, setting out the gap between student expectation and institutional provision — and a values-led way to close it without losing what makes West Dean itself.
Where it stands
Well received by a senior reader, who asked for it to go further. I read the room and didn't push it — included here as a sample of the thinking, not a claimed outcome.
A cost comparison you can click
Your own app next to the subscriptions, worked out for a team your size, including what happens to your information if you stop paying. It answers the question before the owner has to ask it.
Proposals in your own words
Guided questions first, then a proposal built from what the client actually said, split into phases they can pick from. Nobody has to translate it.

Painting teaches you to keep looking until you can see what's wrong with the whole picture, not just the corner you've been staring at. Businesses are the same. The problem people walk in with is rarely the one that's costing them.
Once I can see it, the job is to make it clear to everyone else. That might mean a map of how the week really runs, an explorer the founders can click through together, or a working prototype on the owner's phone. Then we build the thing that fixes it.

Working with AI
A working partner, not the author
I work with AI every day as a working partner. It takes on the legwork, such as research, first drafts and much of the build, so more of our time goes on the thinking and the decisions.
I've shaped my own staff of AI assistants, built from conversations with people I respect, people who challenge me. I set them up to push back rather than agree. A lot of my work has been argued with before it ever reaches you.
The judgement stays with people: yours about your business, mine about what I see.
If we build software together
Who owns my data?
You do. It sits in its own separate database, set up for your business alone, and you can export it whenever you like.
Where is it hosted?
On established cloud services built for this kind of app. You don't have a server in a cupboard, and nobody's laptop needs to be switched on for it to work.

Why people end up spending more
Most of these charge per person, so every hire puts the bill up. And job apps rarely handle rotas and holidays well, so a lot of firms end up paying for two apps and copying between them.
What stops when you stop
With a subscription you're renting a place to keep your information. When you cancel, the account usually closes. What you can take with you is whatever their export button lets you have, on their terms.
Where mine isn't the answer
If you're a small team and a free or cheap app fits how you work, use it. I'll tell you that on the call. Your own app earns its keep when you're growing, or when nothing off the shelf quite fits.

Why a painter
The same eye. Different material.
I'm a working painter with an MA and a practice that's still going. That isn't a charming footnote. It's the whole method. Painting teaches you to look at something until it's right — not until it technically works, not until the client stops asking, but until something in you goes quiet and you know.
That's the standard I hold a scheduling screen to. That's what I'm listening for when a small business owner describes their week. There's a moment when the real problem surfaces and everything else rearranges around it. I've been training for that moment my whole working life.
I build with AI the way I paint — by instinct, by feel, towards the thing that's right. Not because I lack technical knowledge, but because that's how good things get made. The tool doesn't matter. The judgement does.

What I won't claim
That I'll have the answer on the first call. That software fixes a business that doesn't know how it wants to work. That a good name can rescue a weak idea. If I overclaim now, you'll stop trusting the parts that are true.
Outside work
I'll try anything once
Sport, and the more extreme the better. If someone suggests something that sounds slightly unwise, I'm usually already in.
One caveat: not caving.
It's the same instinct I bring to a new client: curious, up for it, and happy to be out of my depth for a while, because that's usually where the good ideas are.

“I begin a piece by choosing its dimensions, tearing the material, breaking through its manufactured form. I lay it on the ground, mix my pigments and apply it with a big paintbrush. I may add gesso to the mix depending on the colour or stiffness I want the piece to form into. I make my folds, compress the material and let it dry.”
“My painting process is labour intensive, committed and performative. I allow the paint to puddle and pool, soak into the surface and through to the underside, staining each fibre as I move over the surface.”

I know a piece is done when it unifies something in my mind and body and triggers my senses with excitement. That feeling doesn't stay in the studio. It travels into everything I make.

By email — your email address, whatever you write, and anything you attach. Kept as long as it's useful for the correspondence, then deleted.
By the "What's not working?" form: your name, email, business name if you give it, the boxes you tick and what you write. It's only sent if you tick the box and press send. It's stored by Netlify, the site's host, and emailed to me, used only to reply to you, and deleted after 12 months if we don't go on to work together.
By booking a call — the booking runs through Cal.com, a third-party scheduling service. They handle your name, email and the time you pick under their own privacy policy.
No mailing list is run here, and nothing is shared, sold or used beyond replying to you, delivering the work you've asked for, or the analytics described above.
Where it's hosted
The site itself is hosted on Netlify. Like any web host, their servers keep standard technical logs (things like IP address and browser type) as part of running the site.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you can ask to see what's held on you, have it corrected, or have it deleted — email to sort it. Complaints can also go to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it.
